Confession of a Writer…”Everyone is a critic.” (Kill your Darlings)

I  read  my  first  draft  of  my  children’s  book  to  my  son  today.  I  thought  for  sure  I  understood  his  humor,  but  his  face  went  blank,  he  let  out  just    a  couple  of  laughs,  and then  he  laid  it  all on  the  table.

“Mommy,  your  book  is  boring.  There  were  hardly  any  funny  parts  at  all.”

My  feelings  and  ego  were a  little  bruised…I  will  not  even  lie.  The  prideful  part  of  me  thought;  “What  do  you  know?  You’re  8!”  The  logical  part  of  me  thought;  “He  knows.  He is  8!”  (My  apartment  went  quiet  for  about  20  minutes).

It  is  a  book  for  children. Kids  need  to  learn  but  they  want  to  laugh.  If  they have  to  learn anything,  they  would  like  to laugh  while  doing  so.  Perhaps  I  am  better  at  satire.  :-/  My  lovely  child  is  certainly  the  “Simon  Cowell”  of  critiquing.  I  have  just  been  humbled  by  a  kid….MY  KID!

(My “darlings”,  this  is  the  part  that  I  hate…..I  must  kill  you  off)
